Class Information - Tap Dance
Tap dance was borne of a mating of the African Shuffle and the Irish, Scottish and British step dances in the 1830s. It first emerged in the Five Points neighborhood of New York City. Dancers from varying immigrant clusters, recently transplanted in the city, would compete with each other. They would showcase their latest moves.
Tap was the darling of Vaudeville and Broadway. Later, tap infiltrated movies and television. In the 1950's the entertainment industry changed, Tap and Jazz music saw a sharp decline in popularity. New jazz dance emerged, evolving from traditional Tap as a new and unique form of dance. Syncopation and improvisation are popular aspects of Tap. Most Tap choreography starts on the eight beat, or between the eight and the first count of musical selection. Tap dance often reflects body movements assimilated from other dance forms. Fred Astaire incorporated ballroom type moves, while Gene Kelly injected his heavy ballet background. Hoofers dance only with their legs and make louder more grounded sounds. Tap incorporates main different steps, from the simplest, the toe tap, to the complex shuffle tap-step ball it is an exhilarating form of dance. Our staff can take you through the many steps and forms. Whether you are a beginner or a skilled Tap dancer Nixpac can help you reach a new level in your Tap experience.
